What a fantastic week!

On Tuesday, we walked down to the Fire Station in Driffield. The children had a wonderful time. We learnt about smoke alarms and what to do if there was ever a fire in our house. We looked at all the safety clothes a fire fighter wears and talked about why they wear them. We then watched one of the fire fighters slide down the pole and learnt that this was the quickest way to get down to the fire engines. We looked around a fire engine and saw some of the equipment on board. Then all the children had the opportunity to sit in the fire engine and to squirt water with the hose. What a wonderful morning, we all had a great time!

This week we have made bean greenhouses using plastic bags. We hope to see our beans start to grow next week, watching first the roots and then the shoots emerge from the bean. Once they have begun to grow, we will transfer them to the front garden and hopefully grow some beans.

In phonics this week the children have continued to practise reading and spelling words containing adjacent consonants. This week we have used words including: champ, shift, shrink, drum, smash and frog.

If you would like to practise sentence writing at home, try one of these:

  1. I can see the frog in the pond.
  2. A fox hunts at night in the dark.

In maths this week we have looked at the composition of the numbers 11, 12 and 13. 11 is 10 and 1 more, 12 is 10 and 2 more and 13 is 10 and 3 more. The children have made these two digit numbers with tens frames and counters and Numicon, collecting ten and then adding more to make 11, 12 and 13.

This week, we have also learnt about sun safety, We talked about keeping safe in the sunshine. We learnt the 5 Ss. Slip on a t-shirt, slop on some sun cream and slap on a hat, wear sunglasses and seek shade in the hottest part of the day.

Please can you make sure your child brings a sunhat to school everyday during the summer term, either on their head or in their bag. Please can we ask you to provide your child with a 'roll-on' sun cream to be kept in school. On sunny days, please apply sun cream to your child before they come into school and we will supervise your child as they top up their sun cream before lunch. Thank you in advance for your support with this.

As always, any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Have a lovely weekend in the sunshine.

Kind regards

Mrs Dean, Mrs Lawrence and the Hedgehog Team.
