Week 2 news!

This week, we visited the fire station! On our walk to the fire station, we were looking out for different buildings/businesses along the way including: a garage, Tesco, opticians, bank, Thomas the Baker and Driffield Junior School to name a few. On arrival, we spoke to the firefighters about how to stay safe and protect ourselves if there was a fire in our home. They told us all about their role as a firefighter, and the different jobs they have to do. Then, we watched the firefighter come down the pole- it only took 2 seconds- very speedy! The children had the chance to try on uniform, go into the fire engine, and spray the hose. A brilliant morning had by all.

In Phonics, we continue to read CCVC words and CVCC words. For example: frog, melt, milk. Our new tricky words this week are: some, come, love, do.
We are working really hard on writing sentences independently. Identifying sounds in each word, and representing those sounds using the correct letter. Please find below example of sentences your child can have a go at writing at home:
The farmer and the goat are on the farm.
The duck got in the boat.
I can put the red coat on.

In Maths, we have introduced numbers 11, 12 and 13. The children have been recognising the numbers, representing them on ten frames, and using number lines to 13 to support addition.

We are enjoying watching our caterpillars grow, they've doubled in size!

On Monday, we worked in groups to make our own greenhouses using a zip lock bag and a damp piece of kitchen towel. A broad bean seed has been placed into our 'greenhouses' and we look forward to watching it grow. We also have lots of sunflower seeds beginning to grow. These will be sent home with your child on Friday, for you to plant in your garden at home and continue to watch them grow.

Just a reminder- we ask all children to bring a named bottle of sun cream into school as the weather picks up. We highly recommend role on sun cream bottles as the children will apply this as independently as possible. This will be applied just before they go for lunch as a top up, but please ensure your child arrives to school with sun cream already applied on a sunny day.

If you have any questions, please ask Miss Corrigan or Mrs Chapman before/after school.

Thank you,

Miss Corrigan and Mrs Chapman
