Hedgehogs

30 January 2026 (by schoollogin)

Another busy week in Hedgehog Class!

This week, we have continued to learn all about the creatures which live in the sea. We reflected on our visit to The Deep and discussed the different creatures we saw. The children have also enjoyed reading and discussing the book, Tiddler by Julia Donaldson. We even watched the animated version today as an end of week treat. The children enjoyed identifying the different fish in this story, I think our favourite was the Dragon Fish.

In our phonics, we learnt the last two Phase 3 sounds: air as in chair and hair and er as in ladder and herb. The children have enjoyed the challenge of reading longer words in our phonics lessons. We have taught the children to 'chunk' these longer words into smaller parts. They read words including: hammer, rabbit, kitten, ladder, carrot and puppet. We continue to practise segmenting words into the sounds they are made up from. We use our segmenting fingers to show how many sounds we hear in the words, then write down the letters to match these sounds.

In maths this week, we have continued to learn about the numbers 6, 7 and 8. We looked closely at the composition of these numbers and finding out how many more to make____? For example, If I have 3 sweets, how many more do I need to make 6? If I have 5 grapes, how many more do I need to make 7? The children have used practical apparatus to support these calculations and some of us are even starting to recall some of these pairs of numbers automatically - great maths work!

In PE this week, we have been practising our rolling skills with a partner. The children practised aiming and rolling their ball so it reached their partner, without them having to move. We will continue to practise our ball skills next week.

For the next two weeks, the children will be completing an Environmentalism project. The children will learn about the importance of looking after the natural world we live in and how our actions can affect others. We will be looking at plastic pollution in the sea and how this damages the sea creatures who live there. The children will be using plastic to create some art work, if you have an plastic bottle tops, bubble wrap or shiny sweet wrapper at home please send them into school next week.

As always if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Have a lovely weekend with your family.

Kind regards

Mrs Dean and the Hedgehog Team.
