Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to you all. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas break.

The children have settled back in this week and we have begun our new topic about 'Under the Sea.' The children have shared what they already know and what they would like to learn about under the sea. We have started the topic by sharing the wonder facts in our book of the week, The Big Book of the Blue by Yuval Zommer.

In phonics this week, we have learnt some new phonemes. The children have been introduced to the term trigraph, which is three letters which make one sound and they have learnt their first trigraph, 'igh' as in the words night and light. They have also been introduced to the diagraphs 'ai' as in the words rain and tail, 'ee' as in the words feet and sheep and 'oa' as in the words goat and soap.

In maths this week we have been revising one more and one less than numbers to five. The children have been using practical apparatus to add one more and take one away to find the answer to one more or one less questions. We have also been practising quick recall of these numbers facts. The children have also been playing a variety of dice games to practise their subitising skills. They have rolled the dice and then called out the number they could see as quickly as they could, without counting the spots. This is something you could encourage at home while playing games which use a dice.

You should have received a letter about visit to The Deep on Thursday 22nd January, please make sure you complete the parental permission part of the letter and return it to school.

Next week we will continue to learn more about creatures which live in the sea, using our new book of the Week, Commotion in the Ocean by Giles Andreae.

Please don't forget PE kit every Tuesday. If your child has long hair, their hair must be tied up for the PE lesson for health and safety reasons.

Have a lovely weekend with your family.

Kind regards

Mrs Dean and the Hedgehog team.
