Happy new year! We hope you had a great Christmas break.

Our topic this half term is 'Under the Sea'. The children are very enthusiastic about this topic already, and have shared their ideas on what they already know about the sea, and discussed what they would like to learn. Our book of the week this week has been 'The Big Book of the Blue' by Yuval Zommer. This is a non-fiction book with lots of information about various sea creatures. We have found out all about fins and how they are used to help to swim, how a sea turtles shell is smooth so they can swim through the water easily and much more!

This week, we have jumped straight back into phonics and we have learned new digraphs including ai (rain, wait), ee (see, feet) and our sound tomorrow is oa (road, coat). We have also introduced a new term 'trigraph'. This means 3 letters together make 1 sound. Our new trigraph is 'igh' (light, night). The children are very excited now they are able to read new words with our new digraphs and trigraphs in.

As well as the writing we do in Phonics sessions, we are also working on the letter formation of letters we already know. We are going back through all of the letters and trying really hard to make sure we are holding our pens correctly and thinking carefully about forming each letter- using our letter formation rhymes. Everyone should have a copy of these at home, along with their a-z handwriting wipe clean activity. It would be great if you can continue to practise at home-the more practise they get, the more natural it will become for them to form their letters correctly.

In Maths, our current topic is 'Alive in 5'. This week, we have represented 5 in different ways, and explored 1 more and 1 less of numbers to 5.

In PE, our topic is ball skills. This week was the first week we have used the balls in a PE lesson, so we spent time exploring the ball and different ways in which the ball can move.

Have a great weekend,

Miss Corrigan and Mrs Chapman
