Week 3

We have had another busy and exciting week in Hedgehog Class!

The children have continued with their daily phonics lessons, linking letters to the sounds they make. This week we have learnt the phonemes: 'i', 'n', 'm' and 'd'. The children have sorted objects by the sound they begin with and we have continued to practise blending these sounds together to hear short, regular words. For example: d-u-ck, n-e-t, m-a-n etc.

For more information on phonics and how we teach the children to read at school, please attend our Phonics, Reading and Mathematics workshop on Monday afternoon at 2.30pm. We will provide information about how you can help your child at home and give out handouts with key phonics information. We hope to see you in the school hall, we will be finished in time for you to pick your child up as normal at 3.15pm.

In our maths lessons this week, the children have been matching and sorting groups of objects in different ways. We started the week by matching socks and finding identical pairs. The children then sorted objects in different ways, making two sets. For example: blue and not blue, square and not square etc.

This week, we have also started our Reception Baseline Assessments, working one to one with each child to assess their language, communication & literacy skills. Next week, we will continue this process, assessing number and mathematical knowledge. This information will help to form a picture of your child and support us to identify next steps in their learning.

Today, all the Early Years children have visited the church to look around and identify some of the key features of the church. They met Reverend Stuart and learnt about why Christians go to church and how we behave in a church. The children then looked around and discovered many amazing treasures in the church. The children will return next week for our whole school Harvest Festival. Thank you to everyone who has sent in donations for the food bank, if you haven't sent anything in yet and would like to do so, please send in any donations at the beginning of next week.

Please don't forget to attend the PHONICS, READING & MATHEMATICS WORKSHOP on MONDAY 22nd SEPTEMBER at 2.30pm.

Have a lovely weekend with your family.

Kind regards

Mrs Dean & the Hedgehog Team
