Whole School Music Day and so much more!
What a wonderful day it has been today. We have had a special 'Whole School Music Day.' We invited in some musicians, who came with a range of instruments. They introduced the children to different musical instruments and showed them how to play them. They also spent time with each class, teaching the children different songs from around the world. The children got to join in by playing a variety of different percussion instruments (sometimes in the right places).
In maths this week, we have been revising comparing quantities, recalling doubles and working with practical apparatus to find out if a number is odd or even. The children are becoming very confident with these concepts now.
In phonics we have continued to read and spell words with adjacent consonants. This weeks words have included: croak, clown, screen, sprain, star, tree, scoop, fright and street. We have sent home the Phase 4 tricky words for you to practise with your child. These words are 'tricky' because they contain phonic sounds the children have not yet been introduced to. The children need to learn these words by sight. The more tricky words they can recognise immediately, the more fluent your child's reading will become. Sentences to practise writing at home this week include:
We bow down to the queen in her crown. The red fox ran down the dark street. I can see three green frogs.
The children were really interested in the work we did on bicycles from the past. At the beginning of the week, we looked at the different parts of a modern bicycle. We then looked at photographs of bicycles from the past and the children noticed that the first bicycles didn't have pedals, a chain or brakes. We ordered pictures to create a bicycle timeline, the children thought the first bicycles were dangerous, as they didn't have brakes to stop.
Next week, we turn our attention to trains. Our book of the week is The Train Ride by June Crebbin. This is a lovely story all about what a child and their mother see out of the train window while they journey to meet someone special who is waiting for them at the end of the ride. We will look at old and modern trains and identify similarities and differences between them, including how they are powered.
Please note, it is our visit to Elmswell Farm on Tuesday 17th June. The weather looks good for this day, so please ensure long lasting sun cream is applied to your child before the start of the school day. It is also very important that every child brings their sun hat with them on Tuesday, as we will be outside all day.
We hope you have a wonderful weekend with your family.
Kind regards
Mrs Dean & Miss Wain
