Year Two British Science week

The journey of water!

In the Kingfisher classroom, for British science week, all Year Twos have been learning about the 'journey of water' in the water cycle. We used a large glass bowl that we filled with shells and stones to represent the sea-bed. We then placed a small bowl inside to represent our land. We poured hot water onto the sea-bed and discussed how the sea is warmed by the sun. We then placed cling-film over the bowl; this was the Earth's atmosphere. Immediately, condensation began to form and we discussed the formation of clouds. An ice-block was placed on top of the cling film to represent the colder temperatures higher up in the atmosphere. The children were surprised to see the precipitation that then began to form. We left our experiments for ten minutes and when we returned and peeled our cling film back, we were thrilled to see that it had 'rained' onto our land! We watched a clip about changes of state, acted out being the water evaporating, condensing and evaporating and showed our learning on whiteboards. What a busy learning adventure!
